Nature

Rio Mogoro amongst poplarsSince ancient times, the territory of Mogoro experienced a strong anthropization, owing to its strategical position in Upper Marmilla and to the fertility of its soils, but also to its proximity to Mount Arci, a large extraction centre of obsidian. This is mainly composed of basaltic tablelands and hills, these latter being geologically characterised by Miocene sedimentary formations of the Tertiary. A few heights hardly reach 200 m above sea level; watercourses with torrent-like speed flow, like rio Sassu, Gora Spadua and the rio Mogoro, the major among them.

Black poplars with shelf mushrooms in wintertimeVegetation usually consists of Mediterranean shrub, including ilex, phyllirea, shrubby species such as lentisk, myrtle and rock rose. Poplars flanking the watercourses once represented a primary supply source for wood, used in the construction of the typical scanni (stools) of Mogoro.

The plateaus of Sa Struvina and Perdiana are covered with garigue, while unfarmed lands surrounding the village are characterised by the massive presence of asphodel and wild thistle.
