The language spoken in Mogoro belongs to the variant Marmillese-Partemontese (after the curacy of Part 'e Montis). This is a variant of Sardinian language, whose vocabulary - although presenting a series of distinctive phonetic phenomena - largely coincides with the other so-called ‘rural dialects’ of Campidano.
This lexicon was rather accurately studied thanks to a 19th-century dictionary by Vincenzo Porru. Max Leopold Wagner, the master of Sardinian linguistics, expressed an excellent judgement on this work, which was defined as one of the most exhaustive dictionaries ever published on a Romance dialect.
Yet, still today, Campidanese poets and writers’ works may teach modern readers a few idiomatic expressions and words which cannot be found in dictionaries published so far.
